Sembra che Dylan abbia scritto la canzone tra settembre e ottobre del 1963, nei quali registrò una demo al pianoforte che venne pubblicata in The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961–1991. Il singolo venne registrato nei Columbia Studios di New York tra il 23 e il 24 ottobre; durante la sessione del 24 venne registrata la versione poi inclusa nell’album.
